Research & Planning: Interview Videos & Analysis.

My Interview Videos & Analysis.

Analysis of Interviews:
  • What type of artists would you like to see in my pop magazine?
Answers:

  1. Taylor Swift, One Direction
  2. Taylor Swift.
  3. The Script.

From collecting my results of the answers from my interviews, the most popular artist people would like to see in a pop magazine is Taylor Swift and also, bands are a favourite to feature as well.
  • Name three colours you associate with the genre pop?
Answers:

  1. Pink, Yellow, Black.
  2. Pink, Blue, Purple.
  3. Pink, Red, Blue.
The most popular colour people are associating with the genre pop is pink, followed by other bright colours such as yellow and purple. However, the answers blue, red and black could contradict this, I think it just depends on a persons preference in what colours they like. But pink is a big choice to consider when creating my pop magazine.
  • What cover-lines/stories would you like to see in a pop magazine?
Answers:

  1. About the artists themselves, how they got into the music industry.
  2. About artist, new releases.
  3. New music.
Most people seem to want to read more about an artist and how they got into the music industry, an interview of an artist appeals to them. Also, new music releases are a popular answer as people tend to be interested in the latest music.
  • What gender do you prefer on the front cover of a pop magazine?
Answers:

  1. Female.
  2. Female.
  3. Female.
A female artist is the most popular choice that people would like to be seen featured on the front of a pop magazine and this possibly could be a popular choice when with who I should feature within the double page spread section of my magazine.
  • What stands out to you most within a pop magazine? And what do you think is the most important thing to include in a pop magazine?
Answers:

  1. The main image & images.
  2. Title, what artists wears & tour dates.
  3. The colours & big image.

It seems the type of images which will appear in a pop magazine are what people focus on the most and also they feel images are one of the most important things to include within a pop magazine.

I will be taking all the results from these interviews into account when I begin to create my pop magazine as feedback is important because it tells us what an audience is looking for, therefore helping me to construct my magazine to fit my target audience as best as I can.

Research & Planning: Questionnaire Results and Analysis.

Questionnaire Results:

  • 10 Questionnaires were filled out.

Question 1 - 6 Results {In Order}

Q1: After collecting the results of my questionnaire, The colour Red was the most popular option that people said appeals to them on a magazine. This is closely followed by the colours: Pink, Purple & Blue.
Q2: All people who took part in the questionnaire said they preferred a female to be on the cover of a pop magazine. No one voted for a male model to appear on a pop magazine.
Q3: The most popular option chosen for the price of a pop magazine to be was between £1-£2, which collected 5 votes out of 10.
Q4: Publishing a pop magazine every week came out as the most popular option with 8 votes. Every month received 2 votes and no one voted for every year.
Q5: All the people that answered the questionnaire said that the masthead "Starlight" was a good masthead for a pop magazine and they liked it.
The option no received 0 votes.

Q6: Unlike the previous 5 questions, the last question on what should be included in a pop magazine received votes for all options. However, the highest option people chose was An Interview, although both Celebrity Gossip and Music Charts came extremely close behind an interview.

Taking into consideration these results from an outside audience, I will build up my magazine using this feedback and improve my pop magazine design and content based on these results. However, I do not have to follow all the highest scoring options from these results if it does not fit my magazine style and content, but I will use these results as a guide in making my pop music magazine.

Drawn Draft of Pop Music Magazine Double Page Spread

The image above is a drawn drafts of a double page spread of my pop magazine. In it I have included a masthead/title, a quote underneath the masthead, 3 different shot types of different sizes, 3 columns to be filled with text, subtitle and a small box for text underneath that subtitle.

I will use my draft as a guide in creating my pop magazine, but it may not be the same as my draft as I begin to construct my magazine.

Research & Planning: Next Steps 1.

What needs completing:

  • Upload double page spread draft.
  • Upload questionnaire results, analyse said results.
  • Upload interview questions and videos, analyse said videos.
  • Gain social networking feedback.
  • Start target audience powerpoint/prezi.
  • Think about production schedule, production documents.

Research & Planning: Double Page Spread Analysis.

Aspects to Analyse:

  • Genre
  • Layout
  • Representation
  • Audience

The genre of this double page spread is pop and I can tell this by the artist used, the colour scheme and the information within the text. The brit award that Jessie J is holding in the smaller image gives away the genre too because that certain award is given to pop artists. All the information within the double page spread alludes to the genre pop, however a lot of aspects of the overall outcome of this double page spread say otherwise.

The layout of this double page spread is full and columned. The text is of a small size, which is what it's supposed to be on a double page spread and the images are different shot types. Although the artist is of  a pop genre, the lack of images - as there are usually multiple in a pop magazine on every page - suggests otherwise, which can be confusing and possibly misread readers. Also, different size fonts are used for the title, subtitle and the rest of the text and some of the text is highlighted in the colour orange, to highlight importance of that particular information. The small alliteration used in the top right corner is a nice touch, as it actually slightly sums up the page content by stating "Fun Fearless Female" and also, appeals to the young audience with it's imaginative use of a language technique.
A bad side to this double page spread is that a small part of the text in the first column, overlaps he large medium shot of Jessie J on the left.

The model: Jessie J in the smaller image - which is a full body shot - in the bottom right, is smiling slightly and holding a brit award which she won. The colours she is wearing are all black, which doesn't appeal to the genre pop, however the brit award shows colours which are bright and the image overall is happy, which does in fact appeal to the audience.
The larger Image, taking up half of the double page spread is well taken, bright and clear. The lipstick Jessie J is wearing is a light orange which compliments the colour scheme, however she is not smiling, she is showing a more smouldering look which does not match the genre.

The target audience of this double page spread I believe is 13-18 year olds. I think this because of the artist used, Jessie J, who is listen too by a younger audience, particularly females. Also, the colour scheme: white, black and orange appeals to the younger audience because of the summer colour (orange and white).

Research & Planning: Music Magazine Drafts, Front Cover and Contents Page.

Above is a drawn draft of a Front cover of my pop magazine. I have included in this draft a masthead, 3 cover-lines, a full body shot, the date & price, a logo, a strap-line and a barcode. The logo will be developed on as it is just a simple star in the photo to show where it would go. The image on the front cover will fill more of the front cover when I make my pop magazine.

Here is a drawn draft of a contents page of my upcoming pop magazine. I have included in this draft a masthead/title, a logo, sub-headings, 2 images which are different shot types to show variety and a few bullet points with a title and page numbers on to showcase what is included in the magazine.

These drawn drafts are my first ideas on what my pop magazine will look like. However, as I begin to construct my pop magazine it may not look exactly the same as my drafts, I will always use my drafts as a guide however, along with social media feedback and my analysis' of other pop magazines.

Research & Planning: Music Contents Page Analysis.

Aspects to Analyse.
  • Audience
  • Genre
  • Representation
  • Layout & Media Studies
This content page is aimed at Teenagers around 11-16 years of age. I can tell this by the choice of images, the  artists are teen icons and very young and they are all smiling and perceived as bright, happy and full of life which teenagers in our days typically should be feeling considering they have a certain freedom of life. Also, the colours chosen are very bright (they follow the 3 colour rule), Pink, Green and Blue. The shade of all three of these colours dip into the pastel shade, which is also reflective on the teenage age and the genre pop.

The genre of this contents page is clearly pop. I can tell this by the use of house style/the colour scheme, it consists of light/pastel shades of the colours: Green, Pink and Blue which also follows the 3 colour rule in a magazine. The iconic artists also allude to the type of genre, as Taylor Swift, although she used to be in the Country genre of music, has recently transitioned to pop music and is a perfect face to represent the genre pop as her songs are listened too - particularly by young girls - very frequently and many people know of her as an artist.

The layout of the contents page is set into three columns, which is what a typically magazine should follow when creating a contents page. The numbers which label the information within the contents page and the magazine are very clear, rounded which can be perceived as more feminine and the numbers are all on the left of the information in each column, staying true to the structure which is created with these columns. Also, there are multiple images scattered around the contents page, effectively filling in any gaps within the page which is great because a pop magazine is usually seen as quite cluttered and busy within the whole magazine and images are a very effective way to rectify this.

Research & Planning: Music Magazine Analysis 2.

Analysis:

  1. Target Audience
  2. Representation
  3. Genre
  4. Layout
  5. Media Language

Here is what was said in the video/voice recorder:
  1. The target audience of this magazine is teenagers and young adults. I can tell this because Taylor Swift is an artist that most teenagers and young adults listen too and her being on the front cover will attract there attention.
  2. Here the model (Taylor Swift) is posing in a very "teenage" position, with her hip slightly jutted out, one arm resting on said him in a arch and the one arm positioned above her head. She wears the colours black and white which are very simple, which to me does not appeal to the teenage audience because of the lack of bright colours. However, I think the young adult audience would be satisfied because simple is not always a bad thing and the blue masthead does stand out nicely.
  3. The genre of this magazine is pop. I can tell this because Taylor Swift is on the cover and despite she used to be associated with the genre Country, she has moved on and gone into the pop genre.
  4. The position of the masthead is good because it's at the top of the magazine and people can see it best there. However, the full body shot of Taylor Swift does cover part of the masthead and therefore, if some readers have not come across this magazine before, they may not be able to tell what the masthead reads.
  5. The magazine follows a three colour rule of Blue, White and Black. I personally love the simple style and thick they are a nice choice because no colours clash. However, like I have already mentioned, some teenagers would much rather prefer much brighter colours and therefore, the magazine may not appeal to a large part of there target audience.

Research & Planning: Masthead Ideas & Audience Research.

Possible fonts to use for my masthead, the magazine i've decided will be called Starlight.

Research & Planning: College Magazine Evaluation

Evaluation:

First of all I can tell that both the contents page and front cover are indeed of the same magazine. I can tell this from the colour scheme, the font type and size.

I  have followed the three colour rule in both the front cover and the contents page, the three colours I have used are pink, white and blue. Also, the background is a light grey. I think these colours work and compliment each other well. However, considering I used different programs to do the contents page and the front cover, you can see the colour of pink is a different shade on the contents page from the shade on the front cover.

The font size and style I think suit the magazine style well, as it is of a reasonable size so people can read it and it leaves enough room for other aspects of the magazine. The font style I think matches the rest of the magazine because it is very basic and blends with the background and colour scheme nicely.

The medium close-up photograph on the front cover is well taken, although I could have improved the colours in the photo to blend with the colour scheme better. The photograph is also appropriate, since the girl is holding a book which the college studies in English Literature and the girl is wearing clothes which we would associate students to wear, making the photo highly appropriate to the purpose of this magazine.

The photographs on the contents page are appropriate too because they are a photo of parts of the Hyde Building and it is also well taken to capture different angles on the building. However, they could indeed be improved by possibly catching the buildings a little closer, especially in the first photograph without the cars being captured.

The cover lines on the front cover are appropriate as all three of them relate to college, which includes different aspects of the college life. I did this on purpose to try and capture all areas of what happens around a college environment because it is not all about the subjects and grade. I also think I picked a good number of cover lines because there is not too many that it clutters the front cover, but there is also not too little of them that the front cover seems empty.

On the contents page I have outlined 20 possible pages for the reader to navigate through the magazine. I think for a college magazine this is a reasonable size of pages. Although, more could be added.

Lastly, I think the title of my college magazine is very appropriate because it is simple and outlines the purpose of the magazine incredibly well.

Research & Planning: Music Magazine Analysis 1.

Analysis:

  1. Target Audience
  2. Representation
  3. Genre
  4. Layout
  5. Media Language

  1. The target audience to me is teenagers and young adults. I can tell this because the chosen artists are of the pop genre and typically, artists such as Katy Perry are listened too by teenagers and young adults the most.
  2. Here the model (Katy Perry) is represented in a happy - but not smiling - and relaxed manner in this full body shot. She does where a black dress, which cuts off mid-thigh but this dress is scattered in bright colourful flowers. These bright colours such as pink and yellow appeal to the target audience because young adults and teenagers are at the highlight of there life and tend to enjoy having fun, which is what these colours represent. (The dress analysis links to the Media Language too, specifically mise-en-scene.)
  3. The genre here is Pop. I know this because it states this saying "inside the court of the new queen of pop", but I can also tell it is of the pop genre because of the chosen artist in the photo and the names of artists that are stated within the cover lines.
  4. The full body shot fits very nicely when covering the masthead because the shape of Katy Perry's head fits the gap of the letter "o" in the masthead named "Billboard." This is a creative way to layout the mast head and photograph because it is a unique way to represent there magazine and will attract the audience with the creative way of merging the masthead and photograph, which i'm sure took lots of care in placing in the exact right place.
  5. The music magazine also follows a three colour rule of Pink, Yellow and White. Although, a few colours such as red and blue in the masthead do pop up which I don't like because it interferes with the set colour scheme. The colours are a nice choice however because they represent summer, which relates to joy and happiness, which connects to how teenagers and young adults should feel when in this part of there life because they are free in a way and not tied down to anything.
